Aluminum PCB Classification


Depending on the type of application and dielectric layer material, aluminum PCBs can be divided into three categories:

• General Purpose Aluminum PCB - The dielectric layer consists of epoxy fiberglass prepreg.

• High Thermal Conductivity Aluminum PCB - The dielectric layer is composed of epoxy resins other types of resins with high thermal conductivity.

• High Frequency and Microwave Aluminum PCB - The dielectric layer consists of polyolefin resin or polyimide resin glass fiber prepreg.


Manufacturing Difficulties of Aluminum PCBs and Solutions


Whether it is a single-layer, double-layer or multi-layer aluminum PCB, or MCPCB, they have many similarities in the manufacturing process of FR4 PCB. Nonetheless, aluminum PCB, as an advanced PCB, still has special aspects of the manufacturing process that require strict and effective management and control.


• Thick copper foil etching


Aluminum PCBs are usually used in power devices with high power density, so the copper foil is relatively thick. Copper etch requires trace width compensation when the copper foil thickness is 3 oz or more. Otherwise, the trace width will be out of tolerance after etching. Therefore, in order to guarantee the best trace width/spacing and impedance control to meet the design requirements, the following must be done in advance. Trace width compensation should be properly designed.

b. The effect of trace fabrication on trace width/spacing should be eliminated.

c. Etching factors and reagent parameters should be strictly controlled.


• Solder mask printing


Solder mask printing is seen as a manufacturing challenge. Due to the effect of thick copper foil, aluminum PCB manufacturing will have a large difference between the trace surface and the substrate if the trace copper thickness is abnormal after image etching, and the solder mask will become difficult. To ensure smooth solder mask printing, the following guidelines should be followed:

a. Soldermask should be obtained with high quality properties.

b. Use two solder mask prints.

c. When necessary, first rely on resin filling and solder mask manufacturing methods.


•Machine made


Mechanically fabricated aluminum PCBs contain mechanical drilling, milling, and molding, and V-nicks and burrs tend to remain on internal vias, which will reduce electrical strength. Therefore, in order to ensure high-quality machine manufacturing, the following principles should be followed:

a. Electric milling and professional milling cutters should be used for small batch production.

b. Attention should be paid to control techniques and patterns during the mold forming process.

c. Drilling parameters should be properly adjusted on thick copper-aluminum PCBs to prevent burrs.
