Why Choose Rogers RT Duroid 5870 Laminate As High Frequency PCB Material?
Apr 17, 2024
Rogers RT/duroid® 5870 high frequency laminate is a PTFE composite material reinforced with microfibers.
RT/duroid®5870 laminates feature low dielectric constant (Dk) and provide excellent high frequency performance. The random microglass fibers filled in the board ensure the device has excellent Dk uniformity. RT/duroid® 5870 laminate has low Dk and loss, making it ideal for high frequency/broadband applications where scatter and loss are required to be minimized.

Rogers RT/Duroid 5870 Laminate Features:
- The dielectric constant (Dk) is 2.33, and the fluctuation range is within ±0.02.
- At a frequency of 10GHz, the loss factor is only 0.0012.
- It has low hygroscopicity and can maintain stable performance in humid environments.
- Exhibits isotropy, i.e. has similar performance in all directions.
Rogers RT Duroid 5870 Laminate Benefits:
- Minimize electrical losses, achieved through reinforced PTFE material.
- Easy to cut, share and machine into shape, providing convenience in the manufacturing process.
- Resistant to corrosion and can be used with a variety of solvents and reagents during etching or plating processes.
- Performs well in high humidity environments and is ideal.
- Provides superior material properties.
- It has uniform electrical characteristics over a wide frequency range and is suitable for a wide range of application scenarios.

The difference between RT/duroid 5870 and RT/duroid 5880
RT/duroid 5870 and RT/duroid 5880 are both high-frequency laminates produced by Rogers Corporation, commonly used in microwave and RF applications. Here are the main differences between the two:
| Items | RT/duroid 5870 | RT/duroid 5880 |
| Dielectric Constant (Dk): | Dielectric constant of around 2.33. | Slightly higher dielectric constant, around 2.20 to 2.33. |
| Loss Tangent (Df): | Loss tangent of approximately 0.0009. | Slightly lower loss tangent, ranging from 0.0007 to 0.0009. |
| Applications: | Both materials are suitable for high-frequency applications, such as microstrip and stripline circuits, antennas, radar systems, and satellite communication systems. | |
| RT/duroid 5870 might be preferred in applications where a lower dielectric constant is desired, potentially offering better impedance matching and signal integrity in certain designs. | RT/duroid 5880 might be chosen for applications where a slightly higher dielectric constant is acceptable, possibly providing tighter coupling and improved power handling capabilities. | |
| Thickness Options: | Both materials are available in various thicknesses to accommodate different design requirements. | |
Overall, the choice between RT/duroid 5870 and RT/duroid 5880 depends on the specific requirements of your RF or microwave design, including factors such as desired dielectric constant, loss tangent, impedance matching, and cost considerations.
